The AI Hardware Challenge: Why AI Data Centers and Edge Devices Need Robust Shielding
A rack of AI accelerators can pack more switching power into a few square feet than ever before. That density creates an electromagnetic problem: GPUs, high-speed interconnects, and power delivery stages packed this close together generate and pick up EMI at levels that require robust shielding.
While traditional servers may have relied on shielding sized for lower power draw and slower signal rates, AI hardware breaks that assumption. A rack running dozens of GPUs at full load pushes more current through, and any gap in the enclosure becomes a path for EMI to leak in or out. For edge AI devices where units often sit outdoors or in industrial settings, the gasket has to block EMI and keep out moisture, dust, and temperature swings at the same time. Precision EMI shielding gaskets built for these demands are increasingly important for teams specifying gaskets on a new AI hardware enclosure.
Design Considerations for AI Servers, GPUs, and Edge AI Devices
Designing GPU shielding into a dense rack starts with assessing the layout. Every panel edge, cable pass-through, and access door on an AI server is a potential leak path, and each needs a gasket sized to the gap it needs to close. GPU shielding on a crowded rack also has to account for AI servers stacked close enough that panel gaps shrink between units. Choosing the right EMI gasket means matching cross-section and durometer to the application, whether that calls for a soft, low-force seal on a lightly loaded panel or a firmer profile on a structural seam.
Edge AI devices add another layer to this design work. A unit mounted on a utility pole or inside industrial equipment needs a gasket that performs across a wide temperature range and meets key ratings for the enclosure, along with blocking EMI:
- NEMA 4/4X. Designates enclosure protection against wind-driven rain and washdown, common for outdoor edge AI devices.
- IP67. Demands dust-tight protection with resistance to temporary immersion, another baseline for outdoor or industrial enclosures.
- UL 50/50E/508. Indicates whether gaskets are rated for use in electrical equipment enclosures, applicable to both indoor and indoor/outdoor enclosure types.
- UL94V0. Designates a flame retardancy rating for gaskets.
Ultra-Vanshield® dual elastomer gaskets from Vanguard Products carry documentation for the ratings that matter most on edge AI devices and AI servers. That documentation gives a designer a basis for meeting the shielding spec and the environmental rating with the same part, whether the enclosure sits in a data center alongside AI servers or out in the field as a standalone unit.
Material Science at the Core: Selecting the Right Conductive Elastomer
A conductive elastomer often mixes metal filler particles through the entire cross-section. To reach the high conductivity required for AI shielding, they must be packed with a high concentration of metal fillers. This increases the hardness of the elastomer, which requires more compression force. More compression force can damage fragile components. Localized filler clustering can also lead to areas where the material allows high-frequency leakage through small gaps.
Ultra-Vanshield EMI/RFI shielding gaskets take a different construction, using a resilient inner core free of metal fillers with a thin outer membrane that carries the silver-based conductive layer. That structure keeps compression force low, holds its shielding performance under full compression, and cuts the metal content needed compared to a fully filled elastomer, while sealing out moisture and dust.
Future-Proofing Your Hardware for the AI-Driven Era
As AI hardware keeps pushing more computational power into the same footprint, and edge AI devices keep that hardware in harsher environments, gaskets will need to be engineered to meet these challenges. Vanguard Products has supplied EMI and environmental sealing gaskets to aerospace, telecom, and industrial electronics programs for decades, and applies that same Ultra-Vanshield construction to AI servers, GPU enclosures, and edge AI devices today.
